शकुनिरुवाच यां त्वमेतां श्रियं दृष्ट्वा पाण्डुपुत्रे युधिष्ठिरे तप्यसे तां हरिष्यामि द्यूतेनाहूयतां परः
Śākuni said: "Challenge the enemy to a game of dice. I will rob Pāṇḍu's son Yudhiṣṭhira of the prosperity that you have seen, which has been burning you.
शकुनि ने कहा: "शत्रु को पासे के खेल में चुनौती दो। मैं पांडु पुत्र युधिष्ठिर से वह समृद्धि छीन लूंगा जो तुमने देखी है, जो तुम्हें जला रही है।"

अगत्वा संशयमहमयुद्ध्वा च चमूमुखे अक्षान्क्षिपन्नक्षतः सन्विद्वानविदुषो जये
Be clear that I will not fight in front of armies. Through the throw of dice, a skilful one can vanquish one that is not skilful.
यह स्पष्ट कर दो कि मैं सेनाओं के सामने युद्ध नहीं करूँगा। पासा फेंककर, एक कुशल व्यक्ति उस व्यक्ति को हरा सकता है जो कुशल नहीं है।

ग्लहान्धनूंषि मे विद्धि शरानक्षांश्च भारत अक्षाणां हृदयं मे ज्यां रथं विद्धि ममास्तरम्
O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Know that the bow and arrows are my dice. The heart of the dice is the string of my bow. Know that the carpet is my chariot."
हे भरत वंश के वंशज! यह जान लो कि धनुष-बाण मेरे पासे हैं। पासे का हृदय मेरे धनुष की डोरी है। यह जान लो कि कालीन ही मेरा रथ है।"
Duryodhana said: "O king! This one, who is skilled in dice, is ready to win over the prosperity of Pāṇḍu's son with dice. O father! You should find that pleasing."
दुर्योधन ने कहा: "हे राजा! यह, जो पासे में कुशल है, पांडु के पुत्र की समृद्धि को पासों से जीतने के लिए तैयार है। हे पिता! आपको यह सुखद लगेगा।"
Dhṛtarāṣṭra replied: "I always listen to the counsel of my brother, the great-souled Vidūra. I will decide on the course of action after meeting with him."
धृतराष्ट्र ने उत्तर दिया: "मैं हमेशा अपने भाई, महान आत्मा विदुर की सलाह सुनता हूं। मैं उनसे मिलने के बाद कार्रवाई के बारे में फैसला करूंगा।"

दुर्योधन उवाच विहनिष्यति ते बुद्धिं विदुरो मुक्तसंशयः पाण्डवानां हिते युक्तो न तथा मम कौरव
Duryodhana said: "O Kaurava! There is no doubt that Vidūra will make you refrain from the resolution. He is engaged in the welfare of the Pāṇḍava-s and not mine.
दुर्योधन ने कहा: "हे कौरव! इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं है कि विदुर तुम्हें संकल्प से विमुख कर देंगे। वह पांडवों के कल्याण में लगे हुए हैं, मेरे नहीं।"

नारभेत्परसामर्थ्यात्पुरुषः कार्यमात्मनः मतिसाम्यं द्वयोर्नास्ति कार्येषु कुरुनन्दन
O descendant of the Kuru lineage! No man should engage in his task with another's counsel, because two minds seldom agree on a course of action.
हे कुरु वंश के वंशज! किसी भी व्यक्ति को दूसरे की सलाह से अपना काम नहीं करना चाहिए, क्योंकि दो दिमाग शायद ही कभी कार्रवाई के रास्ते पर सहमत होते हैं।
Like a straw mat during the rainy season, a fool that abhors fear stands and destroys himself.
बरसात के मौसम में पुआल की चटाई की तरह, डर से घृणा करने वाला मूर्ख खड़ा होता है और खुद को नष्ट कर लेता है।
Neither disease nor Yāma wait for prosperity to come. Therefore, let us act for the good while there is time."
न तो बीमारी और न ही यम समृद्धि आने की प्रतीक्षा करते हैं। इसलिए, जब तक समय है हम भलाई के लिए कार्य करें।"

धृतराष्ट्र उवाच सर्वथा पुत्र बलिभिर्विग्रहं ते न रोचये वैरं विकारं सृजति तद्वै शस्त्रमनायसम्
Dhṛtarāṣṭra replied: "O son! I never like a fight with those who are stronger. Enmity creates distortion, and that itself is a weapon, though it is not made of iron.
धृतराष्ट्र ने उत्तर दिया: "हे पुत्र! मुझे उन लोगों के साथ लड़ाई कभी पसंद नहीं है जो शक्तिशाली हैं। शत्रुता विकृति पैदा करती है, और वह स्वयं एक हथियार है, हालांकि यह लोहे से बना नहीं है।
O prince! You think that disaster will bring welfare, this terrible collection of quarrels. Once it starts, in one way or another, it will release bows, swords and arrows."
हे राजकुमार! तुम सोचते हो कि विपत्ति से कल्याण होगा, यह भयंकर झगड़ों का संग्रह। एक बार जब यह शुरू हो जाएगा, तो किसी न किसी रूप में यह धनुष, तलवार और तीर छोड़ेगा।"
Duryodhana said: "The ancient ones created the rules of dice. It leads to neither evil, nor blows. Today, you should approve of Śākuni's words. Let your instructions be issued for the swift construction of a sabhā.
दुर्योधन ने कहा: "प्राचीन लोगों ने पासे के नियम बनाए। इससे न तो बुराई होती है, न ही मार पड़ती है। आज, आपको शकुनि के शब्दों का अनुमोदन करना चाहिए। सभा के शीघ्र निर्माण के लिए आपके निर्देश जारी किए जाएं।''
Because the doors of heaven will become closer, it is appropriate for us to be engaged in this. Approve of this act with the Pāṇḍava-s and we will then stand equal to them."
क्योंकि स्वर्ग के द्वार निकट हो जायेंगे, इसलिये उचित है कि हम इसी में लगे रहें। पांडवों के साथ इस कृत्य का अनुमोदन करें और फिर हम उनके बराबर खड़े होंगे।"

धृतराष्ट्र उवाच वाक्यं न मे रोचते यत्त्वयोक्तं; यत्ते प्रियं तत्क्रियतां नरेन्द्र पश्चात्तप्स्यसे तदुपाक्रम्य वाक्यं; न हीदृशं भावि वचो हि धर्म्यम्
Dhṛtarāṣṭra replied: "O Indra among men! I do not like the words that you utter. But do what brings you pleasure. Later, you will remember your words and suffer, because such words cannot bring prosperity to those who abide by dharma.
धृतराष्ट्र ने उत्तर दिया: "हे मनुष्यों में इंद्र! मुझे आपके द्वारा बोले गए शब्द पसंद नहीं हैं। लेकिन वही करें जिससे आपको खुशी मिलती है। बाद में, आप अपने शब्दों को याद रखेंगे और पीड़ित होंगे, क्योंकि ऐसे शब्द उन लोगों के लिए समृद्धि नहीं ला सकते हैं जो धर्म का पालन करते हैं।
A long time in the past, Vidūra, who follows wisdom and learning, had foretold all this. The great calamity that will destroy the seed of the kṣatriya-s has now arrived and we are powerless."
बहुत समय पहले, ज्ञान और विद्या का पालन करने वाले विदुर ने यह सब भविष्यवाणी की थी। क्षत्रियों के वंश को नष्ट करने वाली महान विपत्ति अब आ गई है और हम शक्तिहीन हैं।"

वैशंपायन उवाच एवमुक्त्वा धृतराष्ट्रो मनीषी; दैवं मत्वा परमं दुस्तरं च शशासोच्चैः पुरुषान्पुत्रवाक्ये; स्थितो राजा दैवसंमूढचेताः
Vaiśampāyana said: Having uttered these words, the wise Dhṛtarāṣṭra decided that destiny alone was supreme. Fate robbed the king of his senses and he instructed his men to obey his son's words.
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: इन शब्दों को कहने के बाद, बुद्धिमान धृतराष्ट्र ने निर्णय लिया कि केवल भाग्य ही सर्वोच्च है। भाग्य ने राजा की इंद्रियाँ छीन लीं और उसने अपने आदमियों को अपने बेटे की बात मानने का निर्देश दिया।
"Carefully build one thousand pillars adorned with gold and lapis lazuli. Let there be a hundred gates with arches made of crystal. Let the beautiful sabhā be swiftly built, one krośa long and one krośa wide."
"सावधानीपूर्वक सोने और लापीस लाजुली से सजे एक हजार स्तंभों का निर्माण करें। क्रिस्टल से बने मेहराब वाले सौ द्वार हों। सुंदर सभा तेजी से बनाई जाए, एक क्रोश लंबी और एक क्रोश चौड़ी।"
On hearing these words, without hesitation, thousands of wise and skilled artisans swiftly built the sabhā and stocked it with every kind of object.
इन शब्दों को सुनकर, बिना किसी हिचकिचाहट के, हजारों बुद्धिमान और कुशल कारीगरों ने तेजी से सभा का निर्माण किया और इसे हर तरह की वस्तुओं से भर दिया।
Then, in a short space of time, they informed the king that the beautiful assembly hall was ready and that it had been adorned with multicoloured gems and beautiful golden seats.
फिर, थोड़े ही समय में, उन्होंने राजा को सूचित किया कि सुंदर सभा भवन तैयार है और इसे बहुरंगी रत्नों और सुंदर सुनहरे आसनों से सजाया गया है।
Then Dhṛtarāṣṭra, lord of men, spoke to the learned Vidūra, foremost among his advisers, "Go to Prince Yudhiṣṭhira and swiftly bring him here at my command.
तब मनुष्यों के स्वामी धृतराष्ट्र ने अपने सलाहकारों में सबसे प्रमुख विद्वान विदुर से कहा, "राजकुमार युधिष्ठिर के पास जाओ और मेरी आज्ञा पर उन्हें शीघ्रता से यहाँ ले आओ।
Say that he and his brothers should come here and see this beautiful sabhā that I have built, with many gems and decorated with expensive beds and seats. We will then have a game of dice among well-wishers."
कहो कि वह और उसके भाई यहाँ आएँ और इस सुन्दर सभा को देखें, जिसे मैंने अनेक रत्नों से, बहुमूल्य शय्याओं और आसनों से सुसज्जित बनवाया है। फिर हम शुभचिंतकों के बीच पासों का खेल खेलेंगे।"
Knowing his son's mind and that fate could not be avoided, King Dhṛtarāṣṭra, lord of men, acted thus.
अपने पुत्र के मन को जानते हुए और कि भाग्य को टाला नहीं जा सकता, मनुष्यों के स्वामी राजा धृतराष्ट्र ने इस प्रकार कार्य किया।
Vidūra, supreme among learned ones, did not approve of his brother's words and thought them to be unjust. He spoke to him,
विद्वानों में श्रेष्ठ विदुर को अपने भाई की बातें पसंद नहीं आईं और उन्होंने उन्हें अन्यायपूर्ण समझा। उसने उससे बात की,
"O king! I do not approve of this errand. Do not do this. I fear the destruction of our lineage. O Indra among men! When the sons are disunited, a quarrel is certain and I am concerned about this game of dice."
"हे राजा! मैं इस काम को स्वीकार नहीं करता। ऐसा मत करो। मुझे हमारे वंश के विनाश का डर है। हे मनुष्यों में इंद्र! जब पुत्र अलग हो जाते हैं, तो झगड़ा निश्चित है और मैं पासे के इस खेल के बारे में चिंतित हूं।"
Dhṛtarāṣṭra replied: "O Kshatta! Unless destiny turns adverse, I am not worried about a quarrel. The universe is under the control of the creator. The entire world does not run independently.
धृतराष्ट्र ने उत्तर दिया: "हे क्षत्त! जब तक भाग्य प्रतिकूल न हो जाए, मुझे झगड़े की चिंता नहीं है। ब्रह्मांड निर्माता के नियंत्रण में है। पूरी दुनिया स्वतंत्र रूप से नहीं चलती है।"
O Vidūra! Therefore, today, go to the king at my command and quickly bring Kuntī's invincible son, Yudhiṣṭhira, here."
हे विदुर! इसलिये आज तुम मेरी आज्ञा से राजा के पास जाओ और कुन्ती के अजेय पुत्र युधिष्ठिर को शीघ्र यहाँ ले आओ।"
